Engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens by J.H. Baker and engraved vignette title-page and 12 plates by Samuel Luke Fildres (some occasional spotting). (Some occasional spotting, small tear along the outer margin of "Note" leaf not affecting text.) Original green cloth, decorated in black and gilt, uncut (some minor rubbing, a few spots on front cover). Provenance : Joley (signature on front pastedown); Kenyon Starling (bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, in the first state binding (Carter's binding A) and with the earliest ads dated August 31, 1870. "...one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature" (Eckel).
