First published in the New York Ledger in 1859 after owner Robert Bonner had paid Charles Dickens £1000 for the story, then published in the UK in All the Year Round in April 1860, afterwards by T. B. Peterson and Brothers in Philadelphia in 1861 (with other novelettes by Dickens), followed by the first UK edition by Hotten in 1870.
