Browne ["Phiz"] (some pale browning at edges, some occasional pale spotting). Original green cloth, blindstamped on covers and spine, gilt-lettered on spine (a few small stains, slight toning to spine, inner joints cracked); green quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Eleanor Trotter (inscription dated 11 September 1859 on front free endpaper); Centenary Testimonial label; Gilfrid William Hartley (bookplate); Kenyon Starling (bookplate). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, in a variant binding, with identical stamping as on the primary bindings of Bleak House and Little Dorrit , see Smith I:10 and 12 (illustrated). COPIES IN CLOTH ARE RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , the last copy in comparably fine condition sold at auction was sold at Sotheby's London, 11 July 1996, lot 166, and this copy was also bound in this variant binding.
