DIBDIN, Rev. Thomas Frognall (1776-1847).] A catalogue of the library of an eminent bibliographer, containing a most interesting and curious collection of bibliography and literary history. Also, the Boke of Eneydos, compyled by Vyrgyle, reduced into Englysse, and imprynted by Caxton, and the Lyf of Saint Katherin of Senis, with the Revelacions of Saynt Elyzabeth, the Kynges daughter of Hungarye. Imprynted by Caxton. The Books are all in fine condition, and principally bound by Lewis and other eminent binders. They will be sold by auction . London: W. Bulmer and Co. for R.H. Evans, 26 June and two following days 1817. 8 o (207 x 139 mm). With inserted slip for lot 770, as published. Half morocco gilt, by Roger Devauchelle (c. 1980), edges uncut. Provenance : the original owner, who evidently attended the sale, has written in the prices realized (including those revised), buyers' names, added lots omitted from the catalogue, brief notes on condition, etc. (a few cropped). THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE SALE CATALOGUE OF DIBDIN'S REFERENCE LIBRARY, which was supplemented by two valuable Caxtons (both purchased by Triphook). The printed note to lot 160 is signed D., but no doubt many others are Dibdin's as well. The bibliographer decided on the sale in order to finance the publication of his Bibliographical Decameron (see A. Lister, "Dibdin: the terrible last years" in: ABMR , 1991, pp. 490-99). In "Dibdin's Reference Library" ( Studies in the Book Trade in honour of Graham Pollard 1975), A.N.L. Munby reproduces Evans's working copy of the catalogue in a much reduced format; the manuscript annotations mostly match those found in the Breslauer copy, with some variants. Not in Jackson.
