DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, Antoine Joseph. The Theory and Practice of Gardening: wherein is fully handled all that relates to fine Gardens, commonly called pleasure-gardens ... done from the French original ... by John James , London: G. James, and sold by Maurice Atkins, 1712. 4° (250 x 191mm.), title printed in red and black, 32 double-page engraved plates after Van der Gucht, woodcut diagrams (very slight marginal browning), contemporary panelled calf (joints cracked, upper cover scuffed, extremities worn), armorial bookplate of George Wrighte at Gothurst. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Henrey III, 1426; Hunt II pp.491-4. The first important book on garden design to appear in England. It deals extensively with the design and formation of fine gardens (known as pleasure-gardens) and the making of fountains and cascades. Henrey and ESTC call for 16 preliminary pages (the present copy has 14) but both note a variation in the preliminaries of the BL copy, pointing to the existence of more than one issue. The BL copy is without the privilege and errata leaves. Our copy has the privilege leaf, title, 2-leaf dedication, 2-leaf list of subscribers, and one-leaf table of contents. Although it has no errata leaf, the errata are printed at the end of the list of subscribers. PLAW, John. Ferme Ornée or Rural Improvements. A series of domestic and ornamental designs suited to parks, plantations, rides, walks, rivers, farms , London: I. and J. Taylor, 1795. 4° (302 x 231mm.), 38 aquatint plates (occasional soiling, small piece torn from lower margin of D1), contemporary half calf (covers detached), armorial bookplate of George Wrighte at Gothurst. Abbey Life 48. (2)
