DEZAILLER D'ARGENVILLE, Antoine-Joseph (1680-1765)]. La Théorie et la Pratique du Jardinage. Paris: Jean Mariette 1713. 4° (251 x 188mm.). 38 engraved plates by Mariette and C. Lucas after Dézailler and Alexandre Le Blond, including 29 double-page and 9 folding, mostly mounted on guards. (Neat repair to first plate, tiny tear at fold of second plate, plate 'L' partially deatched from guard.) Contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt (front lower corner rubbed, back cover slightly soiled). Provenance: ??? Souplet (signature on title); Damoiseau (inscription); unidentified armorial bookplate (possibly Damoiseau?). Enlarged second edition of the important French treatise on garden design. First published in 1709, this edition contains a new preface and six new engravings. The book was originally published under the author's initials alone, and was later also published under the name of its illustrator, Le Blond. Berlin Kat. 3463; cf. Hunt catalogue 421.
