Batman Gets Beat: "In 1992, editor Dennis O'Neil launched an epic storyline that would eventually run for two years, through seventy-one issues of the various Batman comics and a few others besides. The first past of the saga, titled Knightfall, depicted the defeat and apparent destruction of Batman by a monstrously brutal bad guy named Bane. "'We introduced Bane, a very powerful and intelligent villain, in a one-shot comic,' explained O'Neil. 'Then for Knightfall we broke him out of prison and put him in Gotham City. Bane realizes that Batman is the baddest guy in this big city, so he picks him out. First he breaks all the criminals out of Arkham Asylum, so poor Gotham City is overrun by a plague of really malevolent people. Batman is kept busy for about six weeks without stopping or sleeping, catching up to these guys and putting them back behind bars. Finally Bane confronts him, they have a tremendous fight, and for the first time in history Batman really loses, no doubt about it.' In fact, Bruce Wayne's back was broken... and the Dark Knight seemed to be permanently paralyzed. It was, said O'Neil, a time 'to explore a different kind of heroism with Bruce Wayne.
