Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 45 graded copies (38 Universal, 7 Restored). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 0.5 (1st wrap missing, incomplete) sold for $285 in 9/21. Credits: Cover: Jack Burnley. Scripts: Don Cameron, Joe Samachson, Joe Simon/Jack Kirby. Art: Jack Burnley, signed "Bob Kane" (George Roussos inks), Jack Farr, John Daly, Chuck Winter, George Roussos, Jack Kirby/Joe Simon. Overstreet: "1st 'skinny' Alfred; last Simon & Kirby Boy Commandos." Bat-cyclopedia: "In January 1944, Batman and Robin match wits with DR. GOODWIN.... the inventor of a diabolical chemical formula which, when administered to an unsuspecting victim, 'puts the [victim's] will to sleep' and forces him, in Goodwin's words, to 'remember and obey whatever orders I give him! ...At one point, Goodwin even succeeds in drugging BATMAN, but Batman's 'deep instincts of honesty and justice grapple with the insidious spell put upon him by Dr. Goodwin' and enable him to overcome the almost overpowering effects of the drug.'" — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 118, 208. Alfred Shapes Up: This ish features the debut of skinny Alfred (prior to this this, Alfred was portrayed as a rather portly gentleman). What was the reason for Alfred's sudden weight loss? Well, Alfred was portrayed in Columbia's successful 1943 Batman movie serial by actor William Austin, a rather lean fellow. So, in order to make comic book Alfred a closer match for his silver screen equivalent, Alfred's appearance was revamped. The in-universe explanation was that Bruce Wayne sent an overworked Alfred on vacation, and Alfred used the time to slim down ("I spent my holiday at a health resort, cultivatin' a new figure by hard work... and you'll never know how hard!"). The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
