[who kidnaps] a florist named Pettle and assume control of his flower shop. Inside the dirt of the potted plants which they sell to the shop's wealthiest patrons, the Joker and his men bury tiny tubes of chloroform designed to knock everyone in the immediate area unconscious after a certain amount of time has elapsed. With their victims thus rendered unconscious, it becomes a simple matter for the Joker and his gang to enter their homes and rob them. Ultimately, however, Batman and Robin unravel the secret of the joker's crime technique... [and] take them into custody." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 117, 240. The Joker's Shifting Psychopathy: The Joker is said to have evolved through five distinct stages since his introduction. The first stage has been dubbed his "Ace of Knaves" period (1940-1942), in which he functioned as a brutal but sane killer. By the time Detective #76 hit the stands, the Joker has entered his second stage, the "Clown Prince of Crime" period, in which "The Joker restricts himself to committing wacky crimes. Rather than murder people, he would resort 'to pulling off astonishing crimes in ludicrous situations, often with preposterous gadgets.' Regardless of his antics, writers depicted him as legally sane, as illustrated by one story in which he briefly fakes insanity so he can go to a less restrictive insane asylum instead of the state prison." — Travis Langley, Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight. Wiley: 2021, p. 172. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014.
