DETECTIVE COMICS No. 41 Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: Detective Comics, Inc.] Date Published: July, 1940 Description: CGC certified: Good (2.0). Off-white pages. Grader notes: "Tape centerfold; tape interior cover; multiple crease cover breaks color; tears to cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 81 graded copies (61 Universal, 1 Qualified, 19 Restored). GPAnalysis: A 2.0 sold for $511 in 2/19. More recently, a 0.5 (centerfold missing/incomplete) sold for $787 in 6/23. Credits: Cover: Bob Kane (Jerry Robinson inks). Scripts: Bill Finger, Jerry Siegel, Jack Lehti, Gardner Fox?, Chad Grothkopf. Art: Bob Kane (Jerry Robinson backgrounds), Maurice Kashuba, Ed Winiarski, Jack Lehti, Fred Guardineer, Don Lynch, Chad Grothkopf, Howard Sherman. Overstreet: "Robin's 1st solo." Bat-cyclopedia: "In July 1940 Batman and Robin apprehend the evil GRAVES.... an art teacher at the exclusive Blake School for Boys and a 'master engraver' who, in partnership with Blake, the head of the Blake School, runs an elaborate counterfeiting operation headquartered in an abandoned dwelling not far from the school. Although Graves murders Blake to prevent him from talking, BATMAN and ROBIN ultimately apprehend the counterfeiters and unmask Graves as their leader." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 115, 220. Kirby Cops Kane? A year after Batman and Robin foiled Grave's counterfeiting scheme, Captain America and Bucky solved "The Case of the Fake Money Fiends" in Captain America Comics #4 (June 1941). There are definite similarities of plot between the two capers, such as an abandoned house serving as the criminals' headquarters (although in Cap's adventure, the counterfeiter was an ex-government employee, rather than a schoolmaster). Were Cap's creators, Simon & Kirby, scavenging Batman mags in search of ideas? Unlikely. Counterfeiting was probably on people's minds in the late days of the Great Depression, when honestly-gotten greenbacks were still in short supply. Indeed, the pre-war years were the tail end of what's been called the Golden Age of Counterfeiting, a period dating back to the 1860s, when as much as half of US currency in circulation was fake. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase.
