DETECTIVE COMICS No. 119 Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: Detective Comics, Inc.] Date Published: January, 1947 Description: CGC certified: VF- (7.5). Off-white to white pages. Grader notes: "Light cover tanning; light shadow right center of front cover; light spine stress lines to cover; light wear to cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 48 graded copies (44 Universal, 1 Qualified, 3 Restored). GPAnalysis: A 7.5 sold for $597 in 3/21. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A xx sold for $xxx in xx; a xx sold for $xx in xx. Credits: Cover: Win Mortimer. Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Dick Sprang (ghosting for Bob Kane), Lee Harris, John Daly, Curt Swan. Bat-cyclopedia: "In January 1947 Batman and Robin apprehend WILEY DEREK.... an escaped convict and master makeup artist, now employed as a guard at a local insane asylum, who capitalizes on the delusions of inmates who believe they are famous historical personages — such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin — by posing as Lafayette and duping them into helping him commit a series of crimes." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 120, 190. Postmodern Bat-Babble Dept.: Wiley Derek's ability to draw mentally ill misfits into his crime schemes hints at a psychological dynamic explored by Frank Miller decades later in The Dark Knight Returns — namely, the way that unhinged psychotics are drawn to Batman like moths to a flame. As the Joker's bleeding-heart gasbag shrink Dr. Bartholomew Wolper remarks in TDKR #1 (1986): "BATMAN'S... behavior pattern is like a NET. Weak-egoed NEUROTICS... are drawn into corresponding intersticing patterns. You might say BATMAN commits the crimes... using his so-called VILLAINS as narcissistic PROXIES." The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
