Destruction of San Francisco by Earthquake & Fire Author: Kurz & Allison Place: Chicago Publisher: Kurz & Allison Date: 1906 Description: Duotone lithograph. 50.5x66 cm (19¾x26"), hinged to mat at top edge with cloth tape on verso. Rare lithograph of the destruction wrought by the devastating earthquake and fire that struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906. The image is comprised of nineteen vignettes of San Francisco before and after the earthquake. The images described by row, beginning top left. Top row: U.S. Mint, 200,000 people at Golden Gate Park, City Hall, Seals near the coast, Post Office. Second row: Business District in flames, Reign of martial law & distributing bread, Ferry Building & fire seen from the Bay. Third row: Chinatown and Telegraph Hill, View of the ruins from Nob Hill, Union Square. Fourth row: View from Stanford residence on Nob Hill -- Fifth row: Sutro Heights, California Street, Newspaper row, Stanford Memorial Chapel, Palace Hotel, Destroyed wholesale houses, Cliff House. Reps 363 locates two copies: The Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, and the Library of Congress. No copies are listed in OCLC. Additional shipping charges may apply Lot Amendments Condition: One 10" closed tear into image from lower edge, repaired with paper tape on verso; unrepaired tears of 4" and 2", a few small marginal teas and a bit of edge wear; very good condition.
