(Design at Home, 2nd June 2018) Robin Tanner (1904-88) British 'The Woodsman' etching, inscribed and signed in pencil under the lower platemark 'Tr.pr. final state Robin Tanner fec.et imp.', mounted, framed and glazed in a 1920s-30s oak frame, the brown paper sealed back with label for The Heffer Gallery, Cambridge, plate 13.7cm wide Note: Robin Tanner (1904-88) was a British Neo-Romantic engraver who was inspired by the work of Samuel Palmer (1805-81), Frederick Griggs (1876-1938) and others. Inspired by the 1926 Samuel Palmer retrospective exhibition, he learnt etching at Goldsmiths College in London and produced his first etching in the same year. Part of the etching revival of the 1920s, he believed that the study of nature and of arts and crafts and music was essential to the development of teachers and children. He was able to put this belief into practise after the crash of the etching market following the Wall Street Crash of 1929, as he worked as HM Inspector to Schools from 1935-64. He took up etching after his retirement in 1964 and produced numerous etchings and books. His printing plates are held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
