Descrizione delle Feste Celebrate in Parma l'anno MDCCLXIX per le auguste nozze di Sua Altezza Reale L'Infante Don Ferdinando colla Reale l'Archiduchessa Maria Amalia . Parma: [Bodoni at the] Stamperia Reale [1769]. 2° (554 x 411mm). Parallel text in French (roman type) and Italian (italic type), half-title (Italian only), 4 section titles (bilingual). Engraved additional title by G. Volpato after Petitot, title-page with engraved armorial, 36 etchings (of which 6 are double-page) by Bossi, Patrini, Ravenet, Muzzi, Ant. Baratti, Tom. Baratti, Zuliani and Volpato after Petitot, 4 engraved headpieces and 19 tailpieces, 8 engraved initials. (Small light stain in last plate and some in text affecting a few letters, faint waterstain at foot of first 2 leaves, minor neat tear at fold of a few plates.) Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt arms of Duke Ferdinand I [cf. Guigard I, p.81, fer.2] on sides, elements from the ducal arms in spine compartments (somewhat restored). Provenance : Somerset Malthorpe, Maj. General, of Woodlands Vale, (ink inscription on fly-leaf dated November 1877) -- armorial bookplate with motto ' Constantia et Labore ' -- S.G.E. (engraved bookplate) FIRST EDITION. The marriage of Duke Ferdinand I of Parma (1751-1802) and Maria Amalia took place in Parma in 1769. Bodoni, who had been appointed head of the Ducal printing works just one year before, produced this book depicting the wedding festivities which had been designed by Ennemond Petitot (1727-1801), the chief architect at the court. Brooks describes it as perhaps the most attractive of all Bodoni's works on account of the quality of the plates. These depict the tournaments, a pastoral play, fireworks and a Chinese fair and particular attention is also given to those present and their attire. The work was produced in imitation of a similar venture by Louis XIV for his Fêtes de Versailles (dedication). Bodoni issued two editions. each of 400 copies. This copy belongs to the first edition, based on the criteria of Giani 1948. Brooks 6; Cicognara 1525; Giani p.83.
