款識:藝術家簽名 JSteen(左下石板之上摹仿刻字,縮寫JS)油彩橡木畫板55.7 x 77.2 公分;22 x 30⅜ 英寸Condition reportThe following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Jan Steen 'The Dancing Couple': a terrace with a couple dancing to a pipe and fiddle, peasants eating and merrymaking behind Oil on panel, in a modern ebonised frame in good condition. The oak support is in a very good preserved condition. It has no joins or deformations. It is shallowly chamfered on three sides only. There is a repaired hairline fracture, 10 cm in length, visible beneath the seated piper on the left; very minimal paint loss is associated. Under u-v light replacement of the slight paint loss along the split can be detected, along with a very minor scattering of retouchings to the bottom of the female dancer's dress and to the background. The paint layer is in a very well preserved original condition. The bravura brushwork through the sketchily applied medium is plain to see and the fine details to the faces and delicate tendrils of the vines are intact. Chromatic integrity is maintained and the tonal contrast throughout, but particularly to the fabrics, is unadulterated. Marginal tonal improvement would be gained from removal of the varnish. The painting presents very well.
