Covered in honey and fish sauce, Zhang’s body attracted swarms of flies. The work is thus an image of resilience and resistance in the face of adversity and recalls the Buddhist principles of enlightenment and purification through suffering. Works from this series are important examples of performance art in China and announce the emergence of conceptual photography in the 1990s.----------------------------------------------
