The box of the fan shows light wear and fraying in the corners. Upon very close inspection, there is a light tear near the bottom right fold on the reverse. Minor creasing is observed at the bottom left corner of the fan and three original pinholes are found around the edges. A yellow media accretion is seen at the top edge with additional paint accretions on the reverse, which are possibly original to the time of execution.

Catalogue noteQiu Zhijie’s Heart Sutra is the only witness left of the ephemeral installation that the artist created for the exhibition, Power of the Word, at the Taiwan Museum of Art in 2000, which later toured to America. Curated by Johnson Chang, the exhibition focused on ink art and featured the installation, Heart Sutra, by Qiu Zhijie. Qiu was given a large room for this installation, in which he painted the Buddhist Heart Sutra (Sutra of Love), covering the entirety of the walls of the room with invisible fluorescent paint which only revealed its imagery under ultraviolet light. In the centre of the space was a glass tank filled with formol and a human heart. The lighting of the room was alternatively switched from ultraviolet lights which exposed the Sutra writing on the walls but concealed the central tank in the dark, to crude electric lighting which uncovered the heart in formol but kept the writing hidden. The work was destroyed after the show but Qiu designed this fan as a memento of the exhibition, with the use of both sides of the fan mirroring the concept of his installation. On one side there is the image of a heart and on the other there is a poem of the Sutra of Love, only visible under ultraviolet light.----------------------------------------------
