Description: George Brough (1890-1970), motorcycle racer and manufacturer of Brough Superior. Archive of correspondence, photographs and ephemera from Douglas Wesson (1914-1979), Brough's company secretary and friend. Collection includes a Motor Cycling Club tankard, 'London-Exeter 1931, G. Brough, Sidecar'; four vintage Brough Superior enamel badges, including S5, S99 & S100; three unused Brough Superior stickers, two of which are SS100; an autograph postcard, typed & signed, 24 February 1938, regarding Wesson starting at Vernon Road Works; an autograph letter, signed, on company letterhead, c.1939, congratulating Wesson on his engagement/wedding; an autograph letter, signed, on Salzburger Hof letterhead, 20 December 1958, wishing Wesson a happy Christmas (complete with envelope); an autograph letter, signed, on Pendine letterhead, 29 July 1969, congratulating Wesson on his Silver Wedding Anniversary, 'Will you accept from me my sincere thanks for the many years of kindly help and sincere loyalty you have always given to the companies carrying the name Brough, and to me personally for the support you have given me during the many illnesses I have enjoyed during the last few years. I want you to enjoy spending the attached cheque with as much pleasure as it gives me to send it to you.'; three Brough Superior Harvest Supper menus, 1954-55-56, each bearing numerous signatures (including George Brough & Constance Brough), the 1956 menu complete with invitation card; a letter from Bramley, Lipman & Co., Solicitors, 3 February 1970, addressed to Wesson and relating to Brough's will and trust fund; two signed letters from Constance Brough, on Pendine letterhead, 1970, 'Dear Mr Wesson, Will you please accept this little gift as a token of my great regard for you. I always think of you as the Rock of Gibraltar on approaching it from the sea. Something so solid and good that nothing would move. I thank you for all your kindness & thought both to my husband and myself during all these years, and do truly hope that our good friendship will continue.'; signed letter from Constance Brough to Mrs Wesson, 26 January 1979, offering her condolences following Douglas's death; a quantity of photographs, ranging in date, some depicting the Brough home and gardens (two inscribed and signed by Constance), some depicting the Wesson family at leisure; two vintage trilby hats, believed to have been given by Brough to Wesson as he didn't take to them himself (Brough notably wore a personalised flat cap when riding); several less important/later/unsigned letters, a business card and newspaper clippings.
