Printer's woodcut device on title-page, 10 engraved plates, two with overlays showing the interior regions of the heart (plate facing p.9 and fig. LIV), numerous engravings and woodcuts in text. (Some minor browning and light spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum (textblock loose in binding). Second edition of THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY. Originally written as a physiological appendix to the Discours , this work was suppressed after the condemnation of Galileo in 1663, fearing that his mechanistic view of the human body might be considered heretical. "Descartes considered the human body a material machine, directed by a rational soul located in the pineal body. This book was the first attempt to cover the whole field of 'animal physiology'" (Garrison-Morton). This edition includes an additional "Interpretis epistola ad amicum", on the translation of "tuyau" as "tubulum." These versions of the illustrations appear only in the 1662 and 1664 Latin editions (those in the 1664 French edition were redrawn by the French editor, Louis de la Forge). All are unsigned, but, as the title implies, they were at least "provided" by Schuyl. Wellcome II:114.
