Engraved portrait frontispiece on India paper of Nicholas I, 16 plates on India paper after Raffet; this copy bound without the maps or chromolithographs, but instead BOUND WITH 8 ORIGINAL PEN-AND-WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS BY RAFFET. Contemporary green morocco, by Gruel, the sides richly gilt with a semé of Nicholas I's crowned cipher, and centred with the Imperial eagle, edges red and gilt with a semé of Imperial eagles, gilt dentelles and red moiré silk doublures with gilt Imperial eagles, original green morocco slipcase lined with felt (small area of rubbing on the bottom edge). Provenance : Anatole de Demidoff (stamp of the library at San Donato; by descent to:) -- HRH Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. Second (first revised) edition. FROM DEMIDOFF'S LIBRARY AT SAN DONATO, BOUND WITH 8 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY RAFFET IN A FINE BINDING BY GRUEL WITH THE IMPERIAL ARMS. The text is printed on strong paper, with the plates on India paper mounted-in. Raffet's drawings show various individuals in local costumes, including: Odessa Jews, Moldovan messengers, Russian rustics, Tatar young women, Hungarian grenadiers, Tatar Mullahs, and Turkish infantry.
