Ural Mountains, Russia Due to its high refractive index and equally high dispersion, the chromium bearing variety of andradite garnet (named after the Brazilian mineralogist J.B. de Andrada de Silva), was called diamante, the Flemish word for diamond, hence the derivation of its present name demantoid. It is also named for its adamantine luster. The mineral is found only as small crystals in the Ural Mountains of Russia, the premier world locality. The rich green apparent in this stone is the result of chromium. Designed in the form of an asymmetrical heart, this lovely brooch is set with a large circular-cut demantoid garnet and numerous smaller ones, together weighing approximately 2.10 carats. The small brilliant-cut diamond accents highlight the well-made 18K yellow gold mount.
