Atlas Novus. Atlas Noveau contenant toutes les parties du monde &c. Introduction à la géographie, par le Sieur Sanson d'Abbeville, Géographe Ordinaire du Roi.
Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, [1722-1758]. Folio (22 1/2 x 14 1/2 in). French text. Engraved frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe title, 34pp. preliminaries, and 138 double-page maps (of which 6 folding), all except 2 with fine contemporary full wash color, publisher's quarter red morocco and marbled paper over boards. Condition : rubbed and scuffed. A magnificent composite 'Atlas Nouveau', with 138 maps; in the most complete of all editions. The present example is remarkable for its magnificent full wash color. Amongst the most beautiful maps in this atlas is a map on four sheets titled: 'Grand Théâtre de la guerre sur les frontières de France et de l'Allemagne', with a title sheet showing the siege of Philipsbourg and 13 city maps. But the most striking is Henry Popple's map, originally titled: 'A Map of the British Empire in America with the French, Spanish and the Dutch settlements', here reduced from 21 sheets at its original publication in 1733 to 7 sheets. This was the first large scale map of North America and the first to list the thirteen colonies. The atlas contains a world map, a hemispherical map on four sheets, one continent map of Europe, 3 maps of Scandinavia, two maps of Russia, 28 maps of France, 6 maps of Belgium and the Netherlands, 20 maps of Germany, 2 maps of Switzerland, 2 maps of Spain, 10 maps of Italy and 2 of Hungary. 92 of the maps are by Guillome Delisle, 2 by Jaillot, 2 by Sanson, 2 by de Wit and one by Bellin. Koeman, C & M 1 and 2; Lenglet Dufresnoy, Catalogue des meilleures cartes geographiques, Amsterdam, Meridian Publishing Co, 1965. See also Koeman III pp. 212-216. and Koeman II, C & M 8 (identical apart from 10 maps), for the Popple map: Schwartz & Ehrenberg, 'The Mapping of America', plate 90, and McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 1513 to 1800, 733.1.
