A LETTER FROM A DECLARATION SIGNER TO ITS AUTHOR. In addition to being a Signer and a key leader of the revolutionary movement in Connecticut, Huntington was named president of the Congress in 1779 when John Jay left to negotiate the American alliance with Spain. The letter here to the president of Delaware, enclosing copies of letters from the Congress, was sent near the end of that tenure, as Huntington resigned because of poor health in July 1781. In 1786 he was elected governor on Connecticut and was re-elected to 11 consecutive one-year terms. It is in that capacity that he sends this letter to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson acknowledging an official communication.
