DEANE, SILAS, Patriot, Congressman, Diplomat. Autograph letter signed ("S Deane," with paraph) to his brother, Philadelphia, 22 June 1779. 2 pages, 4to, integral blank with recipient's docket. "OUR SITUATION...IS WITHOUT PARALLEL" A fine letter from Deane, recently returned from his important mission to France on behalf of Congress, giving war news. "...I have repeatedly wrote you...I cannot advise you as to purchasing the Ship & Cargo Advertised as I know not what your Orders may be...and write you...by a private Hand, by whom [I] will send [a] copy of my Cypher, after which we may correspond with greater certainty. Certainly you need not be uneasy as to your Letter being published here, I really wished they had done it, and I would have done it myself with Observations on Ford, who undoubtedly first caused it to be published in London, but I had other affairs on hand; but I...knew it would bring a Reply, & Altercation, which might lead me from my main Object. "I will not venture myself on Politics further than to say our Situation, & the manner in which our Affairs are conducted, is without a Parallel either in Antient or Modern Story. Continental Paper is near expiring in New England, No bills can be procured at any Rate in Europe, & Exchange for Gold, & Silver, is at Twenty in this City. Genl. [George] Clinton is at or near Peekskill in Force, & fortifying on both side the River. Parties of the Enemy have ravaged the whole Country between the River & Connecticut Line, & are daily driving off the Cattle & Sheep to the amount of many thousands, they burn but few Houses, but break the Windows, Doors, &c wherever they come, so as to render them uninhabitable. They daily expect a reinforcement under Admiral Arbuthnot, yet I apprehend will turn on the Sea Coast of New England. Genl. Washington is near them on this side & Genl. McDougall on the other side of the River, but not with a force sufficient either to dislodge them, or drive them back., and they being able by the River to collect their whole Force on either Side He cannot give them Battle. but at too great a risque. This is the Situation of Affairs to the Northward; I will write you more at large...in a few Days....How come you do say Nothing of the News from South Carolina? Our suspense is dreadful."
