Beschreibung:

Les Fees Contes des Contes.
Paris: Damien Beugnié, 1707. 12mo (6 3/8 x 3 3/4 inches; 163 x 95 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces, 8 full-page engraved illustrations), contemporary mottled leather. Condition : folding sheet of engraved music lacking at p.242, lightly soiled, a few small tears; expertly rebacked using original gilt spine. the second editon of this rare, early collection of fairy tales, elaborately illustrated to a level that had not been attempted before, and including the images of the “rapunzel” story. Only the first edition published in 1697, and the present edition include these elaborate images. The work consists of eight stories including "Persinette" (a version of "Rapunzel) and each is accompanied by a full-page illustration as well as another smaller illustration incorporated into one of the frontispieces. In comparison, at this time the stories of Charles Perrault and Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy had only headpiece illustrations. This edition is very rare and this issue appears to be unrecorded: the Cotsen collection copy is the only other 1707 example listed and it has a variant imprint. Otherwise, the earliest printings listed in the NUC are three Amsterdam reprints, of 1708, 1716 and 1756 (each represented by single copies) and RLIN adds another Amsterdam edition of 1725 (one copy in the Pierrepoint Morgan Library). Cf. Barchilon 71-75; cf. Cotsen Collection (copy with a variant imprint); cf. Storer, p114-117 (1725 is given as the date of the second edition).
