Contemporary light brown morocco gilt, boards with broad borders of gilt rolls and fillets enclosing a semé of fleurs-de-lys, fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, enclosing arms of Louis XIV [variant of Olivier 2494, fer 1], spine gilt in compartments, morocco lettering-pieces in 2, others decorated with fleurs-de-lys enclosed by foliate tools, gilt edges (some slight scuffing and rubbing, splitting on joints, skilfully recornered and repaired on board-edges, upper and lower spine compartments skilfully replaced). A BINDING FROM THE LIBRARY OF KING LOUIS XIV OF FRANCE. As Olivier notes, in the early years of his reign Louis XIV employed a fer used by Louis XIII (cf. 2494, note to fer 1), and this binding, on a volume published the year after Louis XIII's death, uses a fer which is a slight variant on that which was common to the two sovereigns.
