DAVID BEN ISAAC, of Fulda (Germany, late 16th century). Migdal David (kabbalistic work). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Central or Eastern Europe, 17th century] 4 o (195 x 160 mm). 307 leaves, including a few blanks, with modern lead pencil foliation. Brown ink. Ashkenazic semi-cursive script. With numerous illustrative diagrams and interesting layouts. (Some light browning, edges somewhat frayed, otherwise good condition.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: Migdal David , a kabbalistic work, was composed by David ben Isaac of Fulda in 1595. The author lived in Guenzburg and is sometimes known as David Guenzburg. He wrote two other books on Halakhah (MSS Oxford Mich. 251 and 728). None of his works were published. Other manuscript copies of Migdal David are found in Cambridge, University Library, MS Add. 1751, and Jerusalem, Jewish National and University Library, MS 8 o 397. The Jerusalem manuscript was described in great detail by G. Scholem in his catalogue (Jerusalem 1930) p. 106-115, no. 43. PROVENANCE: At the end of the manuscript is bound an originally separate leaf, now fol. 307, with an amulet in Yiddish on the recto and a letter in Yiddish and the signature of an owner, Grunem ben Asher [?] Druker on the verso.
