DAVENANT, William (1606-1668). The Just Italian. Lately presented in the private house at Blacke Friers, By his Majesties Servants . London: Printed by Thomas Harper for John Waterson, 1630. 4 o (181 x135 mm). (Lacking final blank, pale stain on title, some light soiling.) Late 19th-century blue half morocco, marbled boards, gilt-lettered on spine, by Riviere (some slight wear at corners). Provenance : William Holgate (bookplate); C. Bohm Slingluff (pencil signature dated 1870 on flyleaf); James W. Ellsworth (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. By 1626, Davenant was at court writing plays, his first effort being the 1629 unacted Albovine, King of the Lombards . After Ben Jonson's death, Davenant succeeded to the quasi-official position of "poet laureate" at court. Greg 428; STC 6303.
