Italic type 1:80. Spaces for initials with printed guide-letters. With the usual setting of quires a-c and with "Alaghieri" on the title-page verso uncorrected. (Some very pale and insignificant marginal spotting, a few wormholes repaired.) Black straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with border of roll-tooled interlocking stylized shell and floral devices framed by a single fillet, smooth spine gilt-lettered and decorated, Greek key roll on turn-ins, edges gilt and gauffered in the 16th century, marbled endpapers, by FRANçOIS BOZéRIAN, signed ("Rel. p. Bozérian jeune") at foot of spine. Provenance : some marginalia and underlining in an early cursive hand. FIRST ALDINE EDITION and the first small-format edition of The Divine Comedy . The Aldine anchor device was added to the last leaf as an afterthought during the press run; thus some copies are without it (as in the Lyonese counterfeit following this lot). Other in-press corrections provide a number of variants, including the misspelling of Alighieri on A1v corrected in some copies and quires a-c known in variant type-settings.
