DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321). La divina comedia , edited by Lodovico Dolce. Venice: Domenico Farri, 1569. 12° (140 x 78mm). Title with woodcut border around first two words and type-ornament decoration. Woodcut initials. Book and canto headings enclosed within woodcut or type-ornament borders, type-ornament head- and tailpieces. (Variable light spotting and browning, occasional light marking, a few leaves trimmed touching side-notes.) 18th-century Italian mottled roan, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, others decorated with floral tools, red edges (extremities lightly bumped and rubbed). Provenance : occasional early annotations and underlinings -- F.G. (armorial blindstamp on title and early leaves) -- [?Count] Cardelli, Rome (inkstamp on title). Second Dolce edition. Lodovico Dolce (1508-1568) was born to a noble Venetian family, and was the author of tragedies, comedies, and poetry, in addition to his work as a translator and editor of both classical and contemporary authors. Dolce's edition of Dante's Divina Commedia was first published in Venice in 1555 by Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari. Adams D-105; Brunet II, 503-4; Graesse II, p. 330.
