DANIELL, Samuel. African Scenery and Animals . London: [by the author, 1804-5, text watermarked 1805]. 2 parts in 1 volume, large 2° (600 x 450mm.). 2 aquatint dedicatory section titles with sepia wash, 10 leaves of letterpress text, 30 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Samuel and William Daniell the plates and text on guards throughout. (Occasional light spotting mostly to margins.) Contemporary boards (rebacked and recornered in calf, cloth ties frayed or lacking, boards slightly worn). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION BOUND UP FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS, "The scarcest and most valuable of the large atlas folios of South African illustrations" (Mendelssohn). Samuel Daniell arrived at the Cape in December 1799, and was soon appointed by Lieutenant-General Dundas as secretary to a mission to the Booshuanas. The expedition reached Latuku, the furthest extent of European exploration. The drawings executed by Samuel on this mission were used both for this work and Sketches representing the Native Tribes ... of Southern Africa , published in 1820 by his brother William. William certainly assisted Samuel with the engraving of these plates as argued by Sutton. Samuel later travelled on to Ceylon were he died in 1811. Abbey Travel 321; Mendelssohn 1:411; Nissen ZBI 1035; Tooley 168.
