Dedication to Prince Leopold. 48 soft-ground etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell all on india paper mounted (27 of the tribesmen and women, 21 of animals). (Mounts spotted, occasionally heavy.) Near-contemporary green morocco (rubbed, extrmities scuffed). Provenance : J. Barnard Davis (bookpate); the Earls of Derby (armorial bookplate). THE DERBY COPY OF THIS 'MOST BEAUTIFUL AND SENSITIVE WORK' (Abbey), THIS THE VERY RARE LIMITED EDITION WITH THE PLATES ON INDIA PAPER MOUNTED. 'Mr. Samuel Daniell .. went to the Cape of Good Hope, from where he accompanied Dr. Somerville on two expeditions into the interior of the country.... He was indefatigable in the pursuit of the various subjects he has delineated; and it was his constant care to see the animals alive, that he might make himself the master of their actions and habits. To the knowledge acquired in this way, he added all that could be obtained in the conuntry which produced the animals he has represented, by conversation with the peasants and natives.' (text). There is some confusion about the forms in which this work was published: there are at least four and probably six different issues. What is clear is that the present example in a regular 4to format with the plates on india paper mounted is extremely scarce. Lowndes notes that only 25 copies 'on India Paper' were published, and the auction records only record the sale of one copy of this work in the 4to format (as opposed to 20 examples of the much more common oblong 4to issue).
