"Advertisement" (really an editor's note) on back wrapper of final part, other back wrappers and inside wrappers blank. Custom clamshell box. Spines on parts 2 & 5 perished, some wear to other spines, spotting to wrappers. Provenance: George C. Shattuck (presentation inscription on front wrapper of vol 2/ part 1); Jonathan Smith (ownership inscription on parts 3-5). Exhibited: Grolier Club, 'Essential Parts,' 1996, p 36. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on front wrapper of vol 2: "George C. Shattuck / from his friend and Servt / the Author." This is Richard Henry Dana's second publication, preceded by only a pamphlet oration. Intended as a competitor to Washington Irving's Sketch Book, Dana both edited the work and was the principal contributor.
