D. MOOR (DMITRY STAKHIEVICH ORLOV, 1883-1946) [THE TRIUMPH OF CHRISTIANITY.] Circa 1925. 28x42 1/2 inches, 71 1/4x108 cm. Bezbozhnik u Stanka, Moscow. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Paper. Dmitry Stakhievich Orlov (who later took the surname Moor) was one of the most recognized creators of Soviet political posters, applying his wit and political dissatisfaction to a uniquely graphic style of ink drawings dramatically accentuated with bright (often red) color. His chosen pseudonym was borrowed from Karl Moor the main character of Friedrich Schiller's drama The Robbers , who the artist believed "ideally rendered his artistic temperament: firm and assertive, not inclined to good-natured humour" (Russian-IC). Following his work in support of the October Revolution, Moor focused his satire on antireligious, and later anti-Nazi propaganda, as well as a select few film posters before his death in 1967.
