2 volumes. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt on spines. Slightly rubbed, a little bumped at corners and spine ends, light toning.
WITH: OSLER, WILLIAM. Autograph Note Signed ("W. Osler"), on letterhead notecard, 90 x 115 mm, addressed to "Bliss & Co.," 13 Norham Gardens, Oxford, June 27, 1919, regretting that he has "not one copy left" of a printed copy of an address for Bliss's library.
Provenance: Robert Woods Bliss, American diplomat and philanthropist, 1875-1962 (bookplates); Mildred Barnes Bliss, 1879-1969 (bookplates).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author: "Inscribed for Robert and Mildred Bliss by their devoted friend, Harvey Cushing." Bliss was an American diplomat in Paris at the outbreak of World War I. Well-connected in Paris social circles, he and Mildred helped found the American Field Ambulance Service, donating 23 ambulances and 3 staff cars, and encouraging others to contribute to the cause.
