Beschreibung:

Orotone on glass. 27x34.5 cm (10¾x13½") (visible plate size); in original gilt gesso Curtis studio frame, overall 40.5x48 cm (16x19"). Original glass orotone, or goldtone, from the photograph by E.S. Curtis, signed Curtis in the image, lower right, with © in lower left. The image was published as Plate 13 in Portfolio I of The North American Indian. Edward Sheriff Curtis is best known for his Twenty-five year project to document the North American Indian through photographs and recordings of song and speech. As the western United States was developed and the old ways faded, he endeavored to record the cultures of the land's original inhabitants. The body of work he left at the time defined America's popular vision of Native American culture. Curtis began his fieldwork in 1906 with the support of financier J. Pierpont Morgan and by 1930 he had documented more than 80 tribes and made over 40,000 photographs. Additional shipping charges may apply
