Lithograph, 14.5 x 11 in. (sight), framed to 21.5 x 18 in., depicting the historic victory of American-bred racehorse Iroquois at the Derby Stakes in Surrey, England. Titled "Iroquois Winning The Derby. / Epsom Downs, England. June 1st 1881.," with horses Town Moor, Peregrine, and Iroquois identified below in their final push to the finish. New York, NY: Currier & Ives, 1881. Bred in Pennsylvania, Iroquois was purchased by tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard IV and sent to England to train and race. At the Epsom Downs Derby, England's champion jockey Fred Archer successfully rode Iroquois, beating odds-on favorite Peregrine by a neck. He became the first American Thoroughbred horse to win the prestigious race. Condition: Print with toning, discoloration, and minor surface blemishes. Not examined outside frame.
