FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF "THE FIRST HERBAL PRINTED IN NORTH AMERICA, and the first full-length medical book published in North America" (Garrison-Morton). Its only known predecessors are Thomas Thatcher's broadside entitled, A brief rule to guide the common- people of New England ... in the small pocks or measels (Boston, 1677, i.e. 1678); and an American edition of Culpeper's The English Physician (Boston, 1708), which was the first medical book (94 pp.) printed in North America. The London Dispensatory "enjoyed a wide popularity in the colonies, perhaps because of its Puritan slant and its bias toward the household treatment of illness" (Norman).
