CULPEPER, Nicholas (1616-1654). Pharmacopoeia Londinensis; or, the London Dispensatory further Adorned by the Studies and Collections of the Fellows now living, of the said College . Boston: John Allen for Nicholas Boone, Daniel Henchman and John Edwards 1720. 8 o (185 x 110 mm). (Some browning and spotting.) Contemporary American speckled calf, covers panelled in blind; morocco folding case. Provenance : Daniel Mathewson (early ownership inscription on flyleaves). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF "THE FIRST HERBAL PRINTED IN NORTH AMERICA, and the first full-length medical book published in North America" (Garrison-Morton). Its only known predecessors are Thomas Thatcher's broadside entitled, A brief rule to guide the common- people of New England ... in the small pocks or measels (Boston, 1677, i.e. 1678); and an American edition of Culpeper's The English Physician (Boston, 1708), which was the first medical book (94 pp.) printed in North America.
