Titled below the image in French and English. contemporary color lithograph of the battle between the uss kearsage and the css alabama. From 1862-1864, the CSS Alabama had wreaked havok in the Union shipping channels, claiming more than sixty prizes. On 11 June 1864, the famed Confederate raider captained by Raphael Semmes took to port at Cherbourg for repairs. Upon hearing this information, Captain John Winslow of the Kearsarge, who had been tracking the Alabama, blockaded the port. Semmes challenged Winslow to a ship-to-ship duel. On 19 June the naval battle took place, but the damaged and ill-supplied Alabama was overmatched and sunk.
