Lot of 2 pieces of gubernatorial correspondence. Manuscript petition, 1p, 8.5 x 14.25 in. N.d., ca spring 1861. Addressed to Governor Andrew B. Moore (1807-1873) advocating for the appointment of Mexican-American War veteran Joseph D. McCann to the captaincy. Among the undersigned are future CSA General and Alabama congressman William H. Forney (1823-1894) and post-bellum provisional governor Lewis E. Parsons (1817-1895). Forney was wounded three times during the Civil War and captured twice by Union forces, while Parsons fought as a Confederate lieutenant at the Battle of Munford. Gorgas, Josiah (1818-1883). Northern-born Confederate general and later president of the University of Alabama. ALS, as Lieutenant Colonel and Chief of Ordnance, 1p, 7.75 x 9.75 in., "Confed. States of America / Ordnance Office / Richmond VA." May 21, 1862. Addressed to Governor J. Gill Shorter (1818-1872), concerning the transmission of supplies from Richmond to Montgomery. Condition: Petition is creased, with brittleness, minor tearing, and discoloration at fold lines. Letter with light toning.
