Crucifix in a Deathhand - one of twelves copies with original letter Author: Bukowski, Charles Place Published: [New Orleans] / New York Publisher: A Loujon Press Award Book / Lyle Stuart Inc. Date Published: [1965] Description: 101 pp. With preliminary leaves of various colors and differing widths. Illustrations by Noel Rockmore 32x21.5 cm (12¼x8¼"), original white pictorial wrappers (or, jacket) with folding flaps, pages, and covers printed on heavy stock paper. No. 8 of 12 copies issued with white jacket, with an original letter by Charles Bukowski tipped in, from a total of 3100 copies hand-printed on hand-made paper, designed, printed, and bound by Louise and Jon Webb. First Edition. With an original manuscript letter by Charles Bukowski tipped in between the signature and colophon pages, reading in full: "L.A. Friday Night March 5/65 - Dear Jon and Lou - Just before leaving. All I have to do is get from this place to train. Have been on the beer, but not too bad. Took suitcase down this afternoon. Did 5 or 6 self portraits last night. Don't know about them. In suitcase. Listening to Wagner, drinking beer. Frances + M.L. o.k. Hard to believe I am to be transported but all I have to do is climb aboard and it will happen. All right then. Love, Buk." The top of the colophon page is inscribed in red ink by publisher Jon Webb: " # eight of 12 copies with letter - with white cover - Jon Webb." Additionally signed by Charles Bukowski and dated 3-10-65 in red paint on the page facing the colophon. These special copies of Crucifix were issued without the wraparound band that accompanies the more common issue. A truly rare issue of this beautiful Bukowski volume. Gypsy Lou series #2. Krumhansl 15. Condition: Some edgewear to wrappers with a short closed tear at spine head, staining to bottom of text block edge; very good or better.
