CRESCENTIIS, Petrus de (1230?-1310?), erroneously attributed in the text to]. La Maniere denter et planter en iardins . [N.p., but probably Paris or Lyons: ?1528].
CRESCENTIIS, Petrus de (1230?-1310?), erroneously attributed in the text to]. La Maniere denter et planter en iardins . [N.p., but probably Paris or Lyons: ?1528]. Small 4° (154 x 97mm). Collation: A 4 . Black letter. Two woodcuts, the first of which serves as an illustrated title depicting the pruning and management of trees, the second almost full-page verso of final leaf depicting a hunt. (Very faint marginal dust-soiling.) Later binding of flexible old vellum and marbled-paper (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Robert de Belder (1921-1995; sold to Bernard Quaritch Ltd, not included in the sale at Sotheby's 27-28 April 1987). VERY RARE EARLY WORK ON HORTICULTURE, and one of the earliest (first printed edition was published c.1486) specialist works on the planting of fruit trees. It is a practical handbook, giving advice on planting and grafting plum, cherry, peach, apple and pear trees, and the woodcut to the title of the present work illustrates this perfectly. Often attributed to Petrus de Crescentiis who was particularly interested in arboriculture, ONLY TWO COPIES OF THIS EDITION CAN BE TRACED IN INSTITUTIONS: Bibliothèque nationale de France and Yale. Brunet III, 1366 (identifying two issues of this small work, although no priority established; cf. HC 3854).
