COWPER, William. Myotomia reformata: or an anatomical treatise on the muscles of the human body . Edited by Richard Mead (1673-1754). London: Robert Knaplock, William and John Innys, and Jacob Tonson, 1724. 2 o (444 x 316 mm). Title printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, engraved full-sheet table of the "Syllabus musculorum" 67 engraved plates numbered to 67, with plate 13 in two states, engraved text diagrams, fine engraved historiated initials and head- and tail-piece illustrations, several repeated, a few woodcut tailpieces and typographic head-piece ornaments. (Blank leaves v2 and Ddd2 removed, frontispiece and title lightly soiled and each with a small marginal tear, scattered light spotting, occasional small stains, marginal dampstain to last few leaves.) 19th-century English dark brown morocco, covers panelled with double gilt fillet and foliate roll borders in blind (rebacked, corners restored, light wear to edges). Provenance : William Robinson (19th-century signatures); Haskell F. Norman (bookplate; his sale part II, Christie's New York, 15 June 1998, lot 390); from the collection of Dean Edell. The first edition of Cowper's treatise on the muscular system of the human body was published in 1694 as a modest octavo with 10 plates. Cowper worked until his death on this greatly expanded edition, which was published 13 years later under the supervision and at the expense of the physician Richard Mead (1673-1754). With its 66 plates, some after Rubens and Raphael, its witty engraved initials and dramatic head- and tail-piece illustrations, this first folio edition ranks among the most artistically inventive anatomical atlases of the 17th and 18th centuries. Choulant-Frank, p. 253; Garrison-Morton 392.1; Heirs of Hippocrates 723; Norman 530; Osler 2384; Roberts & Tomlinson pp. 415-17; Russell 210; Wellcome II, p. 401.
