Errata on final page, E6 and I6 cancels as usual, without the Preface by John Newton found in a few copies. (T1v with small marginal rust spot). Dark green morocco gilt, gilt spine, top edge gilt, others uncut. (Spine slightly sunned.) Provenance : purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 20 January 1969. Exhibited : Grolier Club, ' This powerful rime ,' 1975, no. 42. FIRST EDITION, Cowper's first collection of verse including such well-known works as "Table Talk," "Boadicea: an Ode," "Truth," "Hope," "Charity," Retirement," and "Verses, supposed to have been written by Alexander Selkirk" ("I am monarch of all I survey...") and two poems "On the Burning of Lord Mansfield's Library." The 1785 edition of "The Task," uniform in size, is often present as vol. 2. Ashley I, p.262 (with Preface); Hayward 191; Rothschild 681 (with The Task , 1785); Russell 68.
