cover 1855 (26 May) entire letter to England, headed " 'Candia', Golden Horn, Bosphorus, Constantinople" bearing the remnants of SC16 1d. strip of three (largely torn away) with light strikes of the Star between Cyphers obliteration in black, the reverse showing two strikes (one faint, the other fine) of "POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY" datestamp type 2 (code "C" inverted) in blue-green for 28 May; the entire with some creasing and other faults but not detracting from the fine appearance of this rare datestamp. The letter notes a visit to Scutari and comments on the cleanliness of the hospitals and small number of patients. The entire is accompanied by a small photograph of an engraving of the "Candia" held by the National Maritime Museum. Photo
