COVENS, Jean & Corneille MORTIER (publishers). -- Guillaume de LISLE. Atlas Nouveau, conentant toutes les parties du Monde. Amsterdam: Cóvens & Mortier, 1731 [and later, maps dated to 1770]. 2 volumes, 2° (548 x 378mm). Mounted on guards throughout, engraved frontispiece by Romyn de Hooghe, letterpress title in red and black, 201 engraved maps and plans by or after de Lisle, Le Rouge, Bellin and others, 199 double-page or folding, two single-page, all but 13 hand-coloured or hand-coloured in outline), first vol. with 1p. letterpress index of 'cartes' at back, second vol. with 1p. contemporary manuscript list of maps ruled in red. (Occasional small tears to folding maps.) 19th-century morocco, covers inset with diced russia panels from an earlier binding (rebacked). A fine composite atlas, probably assembled to order by Covens and Mortier for a French client in about 1760, bound shortly afterwards, the second volume has five maps, mostly English imprints (dated 1763-1770) added, probably in the 1780s when the volume came into English ownership. The maps include the majority of maps from the Atlas Nouveau series, together wil approximately 40 maps by Le Rouge, Bellin, and Buache. The Bellin maps include four of America. Cf. Koeman II.
