Council of Trent. Catechismus, ex decreto Concilii Tridentini, ad parochos, Pii Quinti Pont. Max. iussu editus. Rome: Paolo Manuzio, 1566
Folio (326 x 215 mm). Roman type, 39 lines plus headline. collation: A2 B-Z6 AA-HH6 II4: 188 leaves. Woodcut device of Paolo Manuzio on title-page, woodcut initials. A few small manuscript corrections to the text, manuscript notes on front flyleaves about the authors of the Catechism, and four loose leaves of manuscript notes about the catechism loosely inserted. (A few leaves browned, manuscript notes on lower flyleaf pasted to new endleaf.)
binding: Contemporary Italian tan morocco with gilt and blind fillet border (335 x 222 mm), corner fleurons and leafy centerpiece, blind-tooled spine, edges gilt and gauffered, stubs from four pairs of ties. (Spine repaired at ends, corners repaired.)
provenance: Manuscript note in Latin on front flyleaf, stating that this copy belonged to Count Angelo Maria d'Elci (1754-1824), who gave it to the writer's friend Caietano Betoldo (1751-1801), having bought it from a Viennese bookseller for six gold coins and a gift — Giovanni Battista Giovio (1748-1814), of Como, inscription on inside front cover stating that this book was a gift from Giovanni Battista Baserga of Como, his son's tutor — Christie's, London, 3 May 1995, lot 85, £5,600, to Bernard Quaritch — Helmut N. Friedlander (1913-2008), booklabel, sale, Christie's, New York, 23 April 2001, lot 141. acquisition: Purchased at preceding sale via E.K. Schreiber. references: UCLA 772; Edit16 12057 (variant A)
