CORTES OSSORIO, Juan and S.J. PALAZOL DE JUAN.] Memorial Apologetico al Excmo. Señor Conde de Villa-Humbrosa, Presidente del Consejo Supremo de Castilla, &c. De parte de los missioneros apostolicos de el Imperio de China... [Madrid, 1676]. 4 o (199 x 145 mm). (Some pale dampstaining.) Contemporary limp vellum (some soiling.) Provenance : Cuna del Palacio (near contemporary inscription on rear flyleaf). FIRST EDITION of this rare Jesuit work relating to China, and to the criticisms from church authorities in Europe, particularly Spain, of the methods used by the Jesuits in their missionary activities. References to Mexico are made on pages 16 and 144, among others. This is very scarce, with no copies appearing in American Book Prices Current for at least 30 years and no copies located on RLG Eureka. Palau 161931 ("...este memorial es raro...")
