Voyage au Levant, c’est-à-dire, dans les Principaux Endroits de l’Asie Mineure, dans les Isles de Chio, Rhodes, et Chypre & c. De meme que dans les plus Considerables Villes d'Egypte, de Syrie, et de la Terre Sainte [A Voyage to the Levant; or, Travels in the principal parts of Asia Minor, the islands of Scio, Rhodes, Cyprus, &c. with an account of the most considerable cities of Egypt, Syria and the Holy Land], by Cornelius de Bruyn (Cornelis de Bruijn). Paris: Guillaume Cavelier, 1714. French. The Dutch traveller and painter Cornelius de Bruyn (1652-1726/7) left his native city, The Hague, in 1674. After some years in Italy he embarked on a voyage during which he visited Rhodes, Cyprus, Egypt, Syria, Palestine and other places. In 1693 he returned to The Hague, and in 1698 his book "Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn door de Vermaardste Deelen van Klein Asia" was published, containing his impressions from this voyage along with engravings executed after his paintings. Some of his paintings depicting sites in the Near East are considered the first graphic documentation of those sites. The present volume is a French edition of the book containing 100 engraved plates - a frontispice, a portrait of de Bruyn and 98 engraved plates after de Bruyn's paintings. Some additional engravings are incorporated in the text. The engravings include: a map of the Mediterranean basin; engravings showing various cities and sites in Palestine (Mount Tabor, Tiberias, Jaffa, Tomb of Zechariah, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and more); engravings depicting cities and sites in Egypt and Syria, including an engraving depicting the interior of the Great Pyramid of Giza; engravings depicting the residents of the various cities de Bruyn visited, dressed in traditional garments (including several Jewish figures); a number of panoramic engravings (folded), depicting views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Izmir, Constantinople, Alexandria, Aleppo, and more; and additional engravings. [11], 408, [6] pp + [100] engraved plates, 40 cm. Good condition. Stains. Original fine leather binding, with gilt decorations on spine (slightly damaged). Provenance: Collection of Hermann Meyer and his daughter Channah Sapir.
