A photo of President Coolidge, in formal morning suit, signing the Kellogg-Briand Pact. The pact called for signatory countries to renounce war as an instrument for settling international disputes. Originally 15 countries signed the declaration, later joined by 47 others. All the major European and Asian powers signed. Although an admirable exercise in collective international action in favor of peace, the absence of any enforcement measures or sanctions made it impossible to use against the aggressor nations of the 1930s. The photo is also signed by the other men depicted seated and standing alongside the President: Senators Joseph T. Robinson, William E. Borah, Claude S. Swanson, and Thomas J. Walsh, along with Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, and Vice-President Charles G. Dawes. (2)
